The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce is preparing to support local businesses if potential U.S. tariffs come into play. President Tracy Gromniski says a new advocacy committee will ensure the Chamber is ready to respond to any challenges.

“We’re keeping a close eye on this to make sure that we can support the businesses and advocate for the businesses, if that time comes,” Gromniski says. “We’re basically keeping our ears to the ground to make sure that we’re right on top of what that news is, so that we can be prepared to come in and do whatever from an advocacy perspective that we can to support our businesses that are impacted.”

She expects advocacy will be a major focus for the Chamber this year, which was previously managed by the Board of Directors. Gromniski says, the creation of the advocacy committee allows for a more concentrated effort to address issues like tariffs and other challenges affecting Steinbach businesses.

The Chamber is also refining its events this year. The Taste of Steinbach, a highlight of 2024, is already being planned for May. Last year’s event at the Steinbach Airport drew over 500 guests for local food, entertainment, and community celebration.

Two rows of long tables with white tablecloths and flowers in vases, food, and people seated at the tables. Taste of Summer 2024 was a huge success with over 500 people in attendance.

Gromniski says they’re aiming to host over 600 people this year. While the location hasn’t been announced, she promises it will be an exciting evening.

In addition to growing key events, the Chamber is retiring smaller initiatives that have seen declining attendance. Gromniski says this streamlined approach will allow the organization to focus on what matters most to the business community.

“We’re taking a targeted approach,” she says. “It’s all about meeting the needs of our business community and building on what’s already working.”
